How freight class works

LTL carriers use the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) density rule to assign a class from 50 (cheapest, dense) to 400 (most expensive, light/bulky). Density is your shipment's weight divided by its cubic volume — lower density means a higher class and a higher rate. Most palletized DTC freight lands between class 70 and 175.
